BEYOND THE BARRIERS Training Series (virtual session 1)

June 12 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm UTC+0

Free

UDVC is excited to present a training series with Dr. Johnanna Ganz, focusing on Occupational Identity Management through an engaging and in-depth approach.

Description:
As advocates, our work often extends beyond formal boundaries, especially in rural communities where we never truly “clock out.” From supporting coworkers and absorbing personal stories during casual conversations to being the go-to resource for friends and family, our roles deeply embed us within our communities. This skill-focused summer series aims to equip you with strategies to maintain your individuality while effectively managing professional demands. Get ready to learn, grow, and enhance how we support advocates in the field.

This is session one of the virtual series “Beyond the Barriers.” We will delve into Occupational Identity — a new approach for passionate and thoughtful professionals. Even after the calls end, the outreach is done, and the intake forms are filled, you remain—an advocate, an individual. This course explores beyond the barriers of domestic violence to address our own occupational identities, helping us sustain our passion for the field without allowing our work to define us.

Although the training is tailored through a rural lens, participants from urban areas eager to learn new skills are also welcome.

Series:
  • Taming the Roar: June 12, 2024 11:00a – 1:00p (Virtual)
This session offers specific skills and strategies for individuals and support for managers, particularly in light of the additional stressors such as short staffing, funding changes, managing services across multiple counties, and the increased needs of clients with fewer organizations available to serve victims.
  • I Could Never Do That Job July 10, 2024 11:00a – 1:00p (Virtual)
Many advocates experience shame, frustration, or confusion about when and how to introduce their jobs to others, a challenge that is particularly acute in rural communities for both newcomers and long-term residents. This session provides a clear framework to help advocates navigate responses to others’ polite but misguided comments, discomfort, or inappropriate/aggressive behaviors in settings where everyone knows everyone.
  • Charting Your Career Wellness Roadmap: August 14, 2024 11:00a – 1:00p (Virtual)
Advocacy in rural environments can often feel all-encompassing, making it difficult to truly disconnect from work. This session is dedicated to helping participants identify warning signs of various types of stress and to actively plan for comprehensive self-care to ensure career longevity. The goal is to empower advocates to leave the field on their own terms, not because they feel they have no other choice.
Intended audience: Advocates and anyone working in the DV field.
