Reducing Harm, Reclaiming Wholeness Training Series: Session 1

May 9 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm UTC+0

UDVC is thrilled to announce a partnership with Spencer Murray at No Harm for our upcoming 3-part training series. This series takes a holistic approach to ending gender-based violence, focusing on examining trauma, fostering wholeness, and exploring transformative intervention methods. The aim is to broaden our perspective on victim services, and we are excited to embark on this learning journey with you!
The first workshop in this series will be on May 9th, 10:30 am -12:00 pm and we hope you can join us!
Session 1:
Trauma and the Early Roots of Men’s Violence
In the movement to end male violence against women, Batterer Intervention Programs (BIPs) have traditionally served as the primary intervention for men who use violence. Research has shown, however, that BIPs have limited effectiveness in reducing or preventing violence. We can no longer rely solely on intervention strategies that focus on disrupting men’s behavioral and thought processes to create safety. If we want to stop violence, we must widen our lens and address the role that childhood and adult trauma play in men’s propensity for violence. This training will explore how the traumatic histories of men, seen and unseen, can be a precursor to violence.
● Describe the relationship between men’s adverse childhood experiences and the proclivity to commit violence in the future.
● Recognize the limits of behavior and thought modification in creating safety for women and girls.
● Recognize how traditional socializations of boys and men contribute to their own dehumanization and the dehumanization of women and men who defy traditional manhood norms.
Intended audience: Advocates and DV treatment providers!
