Partnering With the Media
The UDVC believes that the coalition must support media in their coverage of domestic violence stories and legislation. We hold ourselves responsible for educating and supporting the media in all facets of their reporting on domestic violence news and events. We encourage the media to connect with the UDVC not only for media requests, but to encourage an ongoing dialogue about domestic violence in Utah, the coalition’s work, and how to shape future domestic violence news stories.
Stories as Opportunities to Support Domestic Violence Survivors
Trauma-informed reporting of domestic violence can raise awareness about the prevalence of interpersonal violence, share potentially life-saving resources, and encourage those in abusive relationships to seek help. The media has the power to influence readers and viewers. The stories the media chooses to cover, and the language and visuals used, have the power to perpetuate stigma or to challenge misconceptions.
For guidance on trauma-informed reporting for domestic violence, please see this Media Guide from the National Network to End Domestic Violence.
